Preparations for Putin-Trump Meeting Shelved Days Following Budapest Talks Announced

There are "no plans" for US President President Trump to meet Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the administration said the two had had a "constructive" call and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The White House declined to provide any more details on why the talks had been postponed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with sources indicating the president had urged him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday the American president endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the war on the current front line.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he said.

Moscow has consistently objected against halting the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on this week, indicating that halting hostilities would merely represent a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the hostilities required resolution, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of maximalist demands that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader last Thursday occurred before speculation that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he commented.
