The most severe potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by experts, including a searing 4C rise in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot surge in sea level. An alternative projection foresees a decline of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and energy needs.

Possible Events, Not Guarantees

These consequences, some of which are associated with climate tipping points, are considered as low probability but plausible. The scientists explained that these models addressed a shortfall in planning that had rendered the UK unprepared for extreme outcomes.

"The severe weather events we have outlined should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," said the professor who directed the research. "The UK has been planning in the absence of the methods to test against worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied policymakers what they need to prepare for environmental results they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Spectrum of Severe Conditions Scenarios

A further series of severe models maps the possible scale of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that thermometer readings could rocket in certain periods by up to 6C above average, while precipitation could be 300% of normal levels.

The chance of the worst-case outcomes occurring could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what steps will be taken to tackle global heating and how the climate system will respond.
