Israelis have assembled across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership postponed official commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' representatives met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A prominent delegate involved in the talks revealed that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.

The representative said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to close the gaps between the two sides.

Essential Points in Talks

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • Future management of the area

Public Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until each abducted person return not a single person will feel safe."

"After we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.

Near the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Activist a participant stated: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of the population prefer the conflict to end in return for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people came together to remember the victims.

From there, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.

"My family are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, especially my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the remains of six people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city said additional victims had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the southern area, medics reported.
