Far-Right Former Legislator J.A. Kast Elected as Chile New Head of State.
Following a conclusive runoff election, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Victory
After over 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Focused On Security and Migration
Noted for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly centered on promises to tackle increasing insecurity and significantly restrict migration.
He frequently cited foreigners, particularly the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the race, he gave an stern warning for them to exit before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His policy ideas included Trump-inspired measures such as building holding facilities, barriers, electric fences, and increasing the military presence on the northern frontier.
Amid a Continental Trend
Several observers view Kast's success as part of a wider conservative shift in South America, similar to this year's electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other pundits also frame it as a continuation of the established alternation of power between left and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Strong Majority
Despite his clear electoral victory, Kast does not have an overall majority in Congress, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are combined together.
This legislative landscape could complicate his plans, such as a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a plan for which he has not detailed specifics.
"We have numerous things about how a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not detailed how he will achieve them," noted a political science analyst.
The analyst added, "On the economy, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures typical of the right-wing. However where there is far less uncertainty is on security policy, because that has been his central theme throughout the race."
