A whistleblower has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities left behind confidential devices allowing the militant group to locate local individuals who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger

The source, called Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the information breach were told to relocate and switch their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.

Lawmakers are investigating the UK government's management of a massive leak of confidential data involving approximately 19k individuals who had asked to relocate to the UK to avoid militant rule.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

A data file containing confidential details, including names, contact details and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at British military command in early 2022.

The breach came to light only in August 2023, when the names of nine people who had sought to relocate to Britain were posted on social media.

Regime's Resources

“There seems to be a false assumption that Afghan rulers are without the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” she told the committee.

Under inquiry about regarding if authorities possessed necessary encryption, the source stated: “They possess all resources.”

Impact of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research presented to the investigation indicated that at least 49 relatives and co-workers of individuals impacted by the leak had been executed.

A legal restriction about the leak was put in force in last year and restricted relevant facts about it from media reporting until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the non-governmental organization associated with told individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“We advised that they change residence where feasible and switched their phone numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if authorities obtained these details, would cause identification and capture,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower disputed that government assessment performed by an ex-government employee had been wrong to state that the possession of the records by the regime was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not confronting militant forces; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves past work history.”

The source explained horrific treatment experienced by affected individuals, involving electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“Instances include toddlers who have had bones crushed to try to get the family to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
